Every other week we travel to our Eastern islands, this itinerary includes St. Thomas and St. Maarten. Both islands are absolutely beautiful and have so much to explore, but after visiting them so often I was very excited about our day trip to St. John we had planned. There ended up being six of us that adventured over to St. John from our original port of St. Thomas.
Getting there was half of the fun; it took a 30 minute taxi ride from the ship, followed by a 20 minute ferry ride to the island, and finally another taxi ride through the steep mountains overlooking the island and the water. The taxi ride($10 per person) from the ship was a bit stressful because the ferry boat only comes every hour on the hour and the driver was cutting it very close. Fortunately, we made it just in time. We each bought our round trip ferry tickets($16) and hopped on right as it was about to leave. The ferry ride didn’t take too long but man was it a bumpy ride. It was probably the speediest little ferry boat I have ever been on and we were hitting the waves hard. We made it to the island safe and sound though with lots of time to spend. The final taxi ride that brought us to Trunk Bay Beach was basically a sight seeing ride with views of the mountains and all the beaches from above. It was truly breathtaking.
Trunk Bay Beach is known as the most beautiful beach on St. John, and it did not disappoint! Because cruise ships don't dock directly at St. John and the population is limited, the beach was empty and it felt as if we were locals. The sand was white and so silky and the water was some of the clearest I have ever seen! We did some snorkeling and swam to a tiny island/rock and took so many photos. If you're like me and enjoy a beach that is completely natural with no commercial elements, then you'd love this beach. However, if you prefer a beach to have a bar, food, snacks, chairs ect... then you might want to find another option. It's definitely a BYOB & food type of beach, but I personally prefer that because it draws in less crowds and tourists-- and I love a bare beach.
To sum up this short but nonetheless, beautiful day in St. John, the views were out of a movie and it was like nothing I had seen before. I look forward to visiting St. John again someday and hopefully staying there a bit longer to fully enjoy the rest of it's beauty. Unlike a lot of islands I've seen, this has to be the most natural one in the sense that there's hardly any commercial elements and most of it consists of land, trees, water, and pure nature-- the way it should be.
